Here at Totally That Stupid, we are huge fans of cheap convertibles. There are few better conveyances than a fun, inexpensive car with no roof throughout all four seasons, just as long as there isn’t liquid water falling from the sky.
From our individual Days One to high school and those weird years we called our 20s and 30s through literally today, the convertible bugs we carry with us – having bitten early and hard – were allowed plenty of time to germinate and flourish. Here at Totally That Stupid, we continue to lament the death of the cheap, fun car. Why is everything so expensive? Why do these Generation-X’ers – a group we proudly identify with – keep driving up the prices for the cars we either drove or coveted in our youth? Why are you on my lawn and where is my comfy chair?

Regular readers of TTS will understand – while we prognosticate at great length on vehicles we are stupid enough to purchase – rarely do we actually purchase any or all of the vehicles featured on these pages. Although, come to think of it, I have been asked where I’ve been hiding my Audi 90 20V and Lincoln Town Car. Regardless, my cohort is more apt to swap fleet members than I am. I’m more of a long-term relationship kind of guy when it comes to the mechanical children who inhabit my garage.

Well-known is the fact your humble TTS staff are station wagon geeks. Having lived with and in them, the long roof versions of regular sedans have drilled deep into our frontal lobes. The combination of utility and potential sport in enticing, especially in a modern package. Last week’s Cutlass was a goofy homebrew that, while certainly entertaining, you probably wouldn’t want to drive every day in any place other than its native Florida. One of the many paths my automotive life may take in the near- to mid-term involves adding a BMW 325i convertible – 325iC, ‘vert, E30, insert your colloquialism of choice here – to the stable.
It’s the dead of winter in Minnesota, but today the sun came out and the temperature went up to 40F degrees. So of course I started looking for clean, relatively unmolested examples. Shockingly, there aren’t a lot of them on the market right now. At least, not anywhere near here. Continue reading
