Lexus IS300: More Than Just Another BMW

IS300

Quick! Name a decent-handling, rear-wheel drive, four-door sedan with an inline-six engine and a proper three-pedal 5-speed manual transmission. Nope. Not that. Care to guess again? Continue reading

1985 BMW 323i Baur Top Cabriolet: No Sleep ‘Til Hopkins

Baur_AsFound

“Foot on the pedal, never ever false metal.
Engine running hotter than a boiling kettle.”

The wisdom of driving a 30-year-old BMW across some of the more desolate areas of America first came into question as we watched Sparks, Nevada fade from the rearview mirror, casually but rhythmically vibrating in time with the four bent wheels. Continue reading

Commentary: Death Of A Manual

Row Your Own

There’s been a lot of chatter for a long time about the impending demise of the row-your-own manual transmission. I’m not talking about those automated manuals – with or without an actual clutch or two – with acronyms lifted from the annals of phone company documentation such as DCT, DSG, PDK, etc. No, I speak of the real, three-pedal mechanical gear changers with a friendly stick emerging from either the floor or – if you’re old – the steering column. I’ve never actually driven or owned a second generation Lincoln Town Car, built between 1990 and 1997. The only real connection – the only real interest – is through the rose-tinted lens of popular culture. Continue reading

1989 BMW 325i Convertible: A Nice Clean Swap

1989 325iC

One of the many paths my automotive life may take in the near- to mid-term involves adding a BMW 325i convertible – 325iC, ‘vert, E30, insert your colloquialism of choice here – to the stable.

It’s the dead of winter in Minnesota, but today the sun came out and the temperature went up to 40F degrees. So of course I started looking for clean, relatively unmolested examples. Shockingly, there aren’t a lot of them on the market right now. At least, not anywhere near here. Continue reading
