Fleet Update: A Different Kind of Porsche

A different kind of Porsche, indeed – and it’s sitting on the right-hand side of my garage as I write this. This is arguably the first production four-door Porsche – built long before the Panamera was a glint in its designer’s eye – except that it’s a Mercedes-Benz jointly developed by Porsche and Mercedes and assembled by both companies, with a lot of cross-town transportation going on. Of course, if you are a regular TTS reader or a three-pointed star enthusiast, you’ve likely read all about these cars and their unique place in the history of both manufacturers over the years. I’ve been a fan of them since they first came out, and even owned a remarkably good one with over 260,000 miles some several years ago. Ever since then, however, I’ve wanted to get another, better example of the model if and when the starts would align and I could both justify rationalize the cost AND find the right car. Now the rationale is simple: E500E’s are headed up in value.

1979 Euro-spec Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9: Luxobarge or Landshark?

What’s this? Another big, honking German sedan on TTS? Well, yes. Despite my recent commitment to myself to talk about some more sporting hardware, I somehow naturally tend to gravitate toward big beasts like this cool 1979 Euro-spec Mercedes 450SEL 6.9 for sale on CraigsList in Hopewell Junction, New York for a very reasonable $8,500. We’ve covered 6.9s before and talked about the bargains that they are in the current market, but this one stands out for its low price, good condition, and Euro-spec goodness. I admit, I’m smitten with it.

2005 Mercedes-Benz AMG E55: Too Cheap to Ignore

We’ve all heard it: twenty grand just doesn’t go as far as it used to. Well, I beg to differ. While it may only cover about two-thirds of a fully loaded Kia Optima Hybrid (ask me how I know), it will also buy you a supercharged V8 packing 469hp, 512 lb-ft of torque, 0-60 in well under 5 seconds, and a three-pointed star on the hood. Unless, that is, the previous owner – like this one – decided for some inexplicable reason to remove it. Nonetheless, Wrap that powertrain in the sleek W211 Mercedes E-class body, and what you have is a supercar in German taxicab clothing. Find this one here on CraigsList in Fairfax, VA for a relative pittance.

1997 BMW E36 M3 Coupe: Clean as they Come

The original BMW M3, based on the now cult favorite E30 3-series,was built as a homologation special aimed at taking-on the likes of cars like the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 and Ford Sierra Cosworths which dominated German Touring Car Championship racing in the late-1980s. Not only did it take them on, but from a sheer racing and driving standpoint, it trounced them. As an owner of a Mercedes Cosworth I can say that. I still maintain that the Merc is a better daily driver, but that’s not what we’re talking about here.

Get one while the Gettin’ is Good: 2006 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Wagon

I think I may have mentioned that we here at TotallyThatStupid are closet station wagon geeks. In fact, it is mentioned at least here, here, and here. Station Wagons (or “Estate Cars”, if you please) represent the best of both worlds in terms of practical motoring: the stance of a sedan with the utility of a truck. What I want, though, is a Super Wagon!

I’m Not As Think As You Stupid I Am

“I need you to talk me out of being stupid.”

You know what kind of day it’s going to be when your phone buzzes and you hear those first words on the other end of the magical string. The disembodied voice has already made his decision, but he wants to go through the exercise anyway. He wants you to tell him whatever BMW he’s going to interview, or whatever Mercedes-Benz on which he’s about to click Buy-It-Now, is either a bad idea, redundant to his current fleet, or both.

In this case the stupidity revolves around your friend driving an hour to see a Range Rover County LWB he has, in his head, probably already bought. Meet Chris.
