1982 BMW 633CSi: Bavarian Shark Bargain in Boise

To be honest, this car is in Idaho Falls, but I’m getting ahead of myself. I love the BMW E24 6-series – always have. I first became acquainted with them when my Dad pointed them out to me, waxing about how he didn’t care for the taillight design. It’s the little things, right? Decades later I had the chance to meet and interview the car’s original designer, Frenchman Paul Bracq, who walked me through his thought processes: a modern replacement for the pretty E9 coupe, containing many of the E9’s design elements but sleeker and hearkening to Bracq’s own 1972 BMW Turbo concept car – especially in the hood and grille. In any case, the E24 is a car I’ve long lusted for, in all versions, but have never had the stars align just right to buy. This U.S. spec car appears clean, and represents a lot of car for the low $2,500 asking price (which can be even lower if you don’t want the wheels!).

1986 Mercedes-Benz 300E: Extraordinarily Clean Everyday Merc

Two Mercedes in one day? Come on, TTS, where is the variety? Truth is, this car is nearly the polar opposite to the 450SEL 6.9, at least as far as Mercedes-Benzes go. Where the 6.9 was a super sedan for the elite, the 300E was the “family” Mercedes. With production numbers in the multiple hundreds of thousands, this was basically the Camry or Taurus of the Mercedes lineup – but a much better car than either in my opinion. The W124-series cars were released in Europe in 1985 and made it to American shores for the 1986 model year, making this clean example a first year U.S. market car. There are many Mercedes enthusiasts who count the W124 as the last of the over-engineered Mercedes, at least those that the DIYer has a hope of wrenching on. Find this clean, one-owner example here on Craigslist in Alpharetta, Georgia for $4,390.

Ingostadt’s Ür-Super Sedan: 1993 Audi S4

Inspired by the Mercedes-AMG Hammer, in the late 1980s German luxury carmakers made it part a priority to develop super-sedans in a race for power that continues to this day. The original manufacturer-developed cars were the BMW E28 M5 and the Audi 200 Turbo Quattro. They were quick machines, but rough around the edges – a little too hard for many drivers. The Audi S4 was part of the better-developed second generation of these family-oriented supercars and competed with the BMW E34 M5 and the Mercedes 500E. Both the BMW and the Audi were available with manual transmissions, while the Mercedes was not. The S6, however, had a further distinct advantage: all wheel drive. Inviting A Vixen Into Your Home

It stands to reason that an enthusiast who is passionate about a marque would be at least a little interested in machinery peripherally related to said marque. I am referring to vehicles which don’t immediately come to mind when thinking or talking about a brand. A vehicular outlier, let’s say.

For example, a BMW car enthusiast could be interested in BMW motorcycles, but that would be too obvious. Our enthusiast would be excited about BMW-powered boats. The Ferrari geek in our group would get excited not about the latest Pebble Beach results, but rather a Lancia Thema 8.32, a generic sedan stuffed full of glorious Ferrari V8.

I’m Not As Think As You Stupid I Am

“I need you to talk me out of being stupid.”

You know what kind of day it’s going to be when your phone buzzes and you hear those first words on the other end of the magical string. The disembodied voice has already made his decision, but he wants to go through the exercise anyway. He wants you to tell him whatever BMW he’s going to interview, or whatever Mercedes-Benz on which he’s about to click Buy-It-Now, is either a bad idea, redundant to his current fleet, or both.

In this case the stupidity revolves around your friend driving an hour to see a Range Rover County LWB he has, in his head, probably already bought. Meet Chris.
