1992 BMW 318i Convertible: Disposable Sports (Sporty??) Car #12

1992 BMW 318i - 1

So first things first: how can I call this a disposable sports car when it’s so upright and seats four life-sized humans? Well, I suppose the true definition of “sports” car is debatable, but for me it is simply something that I can drive with gusto, I can row my own gears, and puts a big grin on my face every time I get behind the wheel. My sports cars aren’t required to have sloped front ends and 3″ or less of ground clearance, neither must they be limited to a carrying capacity of 2.5 people. But that’s just me. If it makes you feel better and we can move on to the car, then think of this as a disposable “sporty” car.

For My Next Trick…

BMW E32

There are good ideas and there are bad ideas – and then there are those ideas that are so bad they come full circle and become good ideas. The corollary is also true: Really exceptional ideas can turn bad, if pushed beyond the bounds of good sense. Continue reading

1985 BMW 735i 5-speed: Be The Manager

This will not turn into a Mercedes-Benz versus BMW war. This is not some point/counterpoint concerning which large German sedan from the 1980s is a better – or worse – idea. I’m not going to get into a pissing contest with my blog mate over the fact that W126 Benzes will always be tubby cars best suited for extremely large German banker managers. Or, in the case of the 280SE, assistant bank managers. Continue reading

1983 BMW E23 733i 5-speed: Teutonic Sports Barge

Once upon a time the term “sports sedan” referred to a four-door automobile whose driving characteristics engaged the driver in the actual act of driving through steering feedback, a taut suspension, and (gasp!) a manual transmission whereby the driver actually went through the process of selecting the appropriate cog and engaging it through a shifter and a clever foot pedal that released the gears. It is arguable whether BMW invented the concept of the sports sedan, but they worked hard through the late 1960s and te 1970s to hone it. By the time this car made the scene in 1983, BMW was at the top of the sports sedan heap. Find it here on eBay in Salem, New Hampshire with a starting bid of $200.

I’m Not As Think As You Stupid I Am

“I need you to talk me out of being stupid.”

You know what kind of day it’s going to be when your phone buzzes and you hear those first words on the other end of the magical string. The disembodied voice has already made his decision, but he wants to go through the exercise anyway. He wants you to tell him whatever BMW he’s going to interview, or whatever Mercedes-Benz on which he’s about to click Buy-It-Now, is either a bad idea, redundant to his current fleet, or both.

In this case the stupidity revolves around your friend driving an hour to see a Range Rover County LWB he has, in his head, probably already bought. Meet Chris.
