Fleet Update: A Different Kind of Porsche

dsc_5146

A different kind of Porsche, indeed – and it’s sitting on the right-hand side of my garage as I write this. This is arguably the first production four-door Porsche – built long before the Panamera was a glint in its designer’s eye – except that it’s a Mercedes-Benz jointly developed by Porsche and Mercedes and assembled by both companies, with a lot of cross-town transportation going on. Of course, if you are a regular TTS reader or a three-pointed star enthusiast, you’ve likely read all about these cars and their unique place in the history of both manufacturers over the years. I’ve been a fan of them since they first came out, and even owned a remarkably good one with over 260,000 miles some several years ago. Ever since then, however, I’ve wanted to get another, better example of the model if and when the starts would align and I could both justify rationalize the cost AND find the right car. Now the rationale is simple: E500E’s are headed up in value.

Change is in the Air…..

QM

There’s change afoot here at TTS. No, neither of us has gone transgender, and yes, it will include some more frequent posting.  This once-a-quarter pattern isn’t really working for us, although traffic has remained remarkably substantial. The internet is a fascinating place. First off, if you’re not following us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, please do! You’ll find more frequent tidbits through those outlets than on the official blog, although this remains our home of homes. But all that’s not what I’m really here to talk about, either.  This is first and foremost a car blog, and as such the interesting content is about cars. So brace yourselves, folks, as there are changes coming to the TTS fleet!

1979 Euro-spec Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9: Luxobarge or Landshark?

1979 450SEL - 1

What’s this? Another big, honking German sedan on TTS? Well, yes. Despite my recent commitment to myself to talk about some more sporting hardware, I somehow naturally tend to gravitate toward big beasts like this cool 1979 Euro-spec Mercedes 450SEL 6.9 for sale on CraigsList in Hopewell Junction, New York for a very reasonable $8,500. We’ve covered 6.9s before and talked about the bargains that they are in the current market, but this one stands out for its low price, good condition, and Euro-spec goodness. I admit, I’m smitten with it.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E: Ridden Hard and Put Away Wet, But Dirt Cheap for a MercPorsche!

1992 Mercedes 500E - 1

Since I was about 12 years old I’ve had this fantasy of taking some dilapidated old car and making it showroom new once again. I had this vision of rolling the project into my garage semi-wrapped in a tarp, spending my nights and weekends out there rebuilding, refurbishing, and replacing, maybe even some paint and bodywork, and eventually pulling it back out of the garage to the accolades of my friends and family who knew the blood, sweat, and tears I’d invested. Sort of like John Cusack’s Lane Meyer character in Better Off Dead did with the 1st generation Camaro that his dad (M*A*S*H’s Charles Emerson Winchester, III) had threatened to have junked. My problem is that I am lazy. And poor. Still, this rare, Porsche-built Mercedes-Benz 500E needs just enough that its price is the lowest we have ever seen for one, and its needs are largely cosmetic in nature. Surely I could make it perfect. Or you could. Find it here on eBay in Huntington Beach, California with a Buy It Now price of just $6,550 or best offer.

1995 Mercedes-Benz SL500: Are You Feeling Lucky?

Yes, folks, the blog has been quiet for a while. Truth be told, our day jobs have been taking it out of us lately, and we haven’t even been scanning the classifieds lately, much less blogging about interesting finds! That is, until this weekend when I was doing some catch-up writing for one of my other automotive outlets, and I managed to revitalize my dormant car hunting gene. I’ve actually stumbled across a few interesting things over the past few days, but this one really asks the question that we are all about: are you totally that stupid? The car in question is the 1995 Mercedes-Benz R129 SL500 roadster you see here, available here on Craigslist in my hometown of Fairfax, VA for just $3,900. Seriously, beat Miata money for a V8-powered Mercedes Sports Leicht two-seater!

Bang for your Buck: 2001 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG

Mercedes-Benz has a long and storied history of building super-fast sedans going back to the 300SEL 6.3 of the late 1960s, wherein rogue engineer Erich Waxenberger took the monstrous 6.3 liter M100 V8 from the 600-series limos and dropped it into the mid-sized W109 300SEL – a car that previously had seen nothing larger than a 2.8 liter inline-6. The result was a brick of a car that performed extraordinarily well even by today’s standards with 0-60 times below 7 seconds and a top speed nearing 140mph. Famed tuners AMG (for Aufrecht and Melcher, the founders, and Großaspach, Aufrecht’s birthplace) took the 6.3 and built a bored-out killer widebody version and campaigned it throughout the late-sixites and early 1970s with great success.
